Orphan Drug Status for Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

The FDA has granted orphan drug designation to GenVec’s TNFerade for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The medication is an adenovector, or DNA carrier, that contains the gene for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), an immune system protein with potent and well-documented anticancer effects, for direct injection into tumors.
